about

"The concerts began with the performance of João Almeida, armed with his usual trumpet and a new instrument, a “pocket trumpet” similar to those of Joe McPhee and Sei Miguel. The circumstance further accentuated the young musician's references to the veteran of Portuguese creative jazz, without him ever trying to follow in his footsteps. And if on many occasions Almeida explored the same extensive techniques that distinguished Peter Evans, of whom he is a student, the music we heard followed other paths. The performance alone, on this occasion as in the recently released “Solo Sessions”, allowed us to follow in detail the way this improviser thinks and feels his speech: everything was exposed, naked, without artifice. João Almeida's phrasing alternated between the abrupt cut of the expository linearity, for the benefit of the dynamics, and the repetition of motifs, in an ingenious and challenging articulation for the ears. In the same way, he jumped from tonality, and even from conventional melody, to the production of noise, identifying this as the prolongation of the respiratory process itself. Nothing was excluded and that is why his intervention was remarkable."
